The Mane Squeeze
A Roaring Good Time!

I can quite literally count on one hand the number of authors out there who have the ability to make me chuckle, giggle, and laugh out loud while reading their books - in fact, there would be several fingers left over if you want authors that make me do so with every single book they pen (regardless of pseudonym). Shelly Laurenston (who also writes the hilarious and sizzling Dragon Kin series under G.A. Aiken - and I highly recommend those), frankly, is the only one. I haven't been reading them long...I only stumbled across them this past year...but ever since, I've spent many a happy, happy hour gorging myself on the fun and furry times, and have now read them all. The Mane Squeeze is one of my favorites of this particular series.

Not only is it funny and sexy, but Lock and Gwen turned out to be my favorite romantic pair of the series. I just adored Lock, with his unique and endearing lumbering bear ways, and Gwen, with her feisty mixed blood and mixed personality - so plucky and assured in some areas, and yet with her own insecurities that kept her very real and likable. And as per the norm, the supporting cast - some we know, some we just got introduced to - are fabulous and add such charming and wonderful layers to the book. Not to mention some hysterical comedy.

For humorous paranormal romances, I really don't think you can get much better than Laurenston right now. There are aspects of the plot that provide some conflict and character growth, but nothing so heavy or deep that you would need to delve into the plot as a serious discussion topic. There's maniacal roller derby, for goodness sakes! You don't read Laurenston if you want complex and intricate plot development. There's just enough there to meat the bones, not enough to drag you down from the grin-fest. Sometimes I like my paranormal books (romances and urban fantasy both) a little darker - so I read darker authors. Other times, I just need to have a good time. Laurenston's my go-to gal for that - bar none. I can not say enough just how comforting it is to know that no matter what's going on in life, a book by Laurenston (or her alter ego Aiken) can bring a smile to my face and give me a break from my day-to-day. The series as a whole is one great big keeper and re-reader for me, and I hope for you too.

5 Stars - Loved it
4 Stars - Liked it
3 Stars - It's okay
