Edward Unconditionally: Common Powers 3 by Lynn Lorenz

Genre: LGBT - M/M Paranormal Romance
Series: Common Powers, Book 3
Formats: Paperback

Edward Unconditionally: Common Powers 35 Stars
I Love Edward...Unconditionally!!

What a delight this book was! I'm totally crushing on Edward, first of all, and while I realize that there's absolutely no future in it, I am just thrilled I got a chance to know him at all.

And that's one of the things I admire most about Lorenz's books in this series - we're given time and opportunity to really get to know them, faults and strengths both. I've read the first two books in this series and have been increasingly impressed with them, and Edward Unconditionally truly hit it out of the park for me. What a richly woven and complex story - truly a rewarding romance novel.

If you're looking for M/M erotica, you won't find it here. The sex in Edward Unconditionally is absolutely erotic, but it's not even close to being the driving plot of the story and it's not as plentiful as it is in erotica or even romantica novels. That sets this book apart from the first two of the series.

Edward Unconditionally is all about two men, one who spent his whole adult life struggling to be better than he came from and in so doing, forgot who he was - and the other man who's spent all his life being exactly who he is and getting broken over and over because of it. It's about the rough and rocky road towards finding and accepting themselves and each other.

And reading it is like the very best of road trips.

One wish: I'd love to see more about Edward and Jack (and Winston). The book had alluded to issues that made Jack choose the way he was living, but never got around to explaining them, and I would've liked to have read that, so I'm hoping we'll see this couple again. I feel pretty good about the chance we will, because the series does include the previously introduced characters in each subsequent book, so I can't wait for the next one.

Thanks for the great read!

Rush in the Dark: Common Powers 24 Stars
Darkly Delicious

Lynn Lorenz has a hit series starting with this second book in the Common Powers series. Rush in the Dark was well layered and the two yummy leads, Brian and Rush, were well written and hotter than a Texas summer day. While this book lacked the action and conflict of it's predecessor, Soul Bonds, it far surpassed the first in Lorenz's series in quality of pacing, tone, and reality. While the eroticism of Brian and Rush's relationship utterly burns up the pages, this book reads much closer to the M/M romance novel genre than pure M/M erotic fiction, with a stronger plot and steadier character development. The only thing that kept this from being a five star for me was a gratuitous scene near the end of the book that I felt did nothing to further the story or cement the relationship between the male leads.

All in all, though, it was a steamy delight to read.

Promising...But Not Without Flaws

Soul Bonds by Lynn Lorenz is the first in a promising series of M/M romance with a tinge of paranormal included. I'm a huge fan of paranormal romances, and I'm a growing fan of M/M romance, so putting these two things together just really works for me. Unfortunately, in Soul Bonds, the story surrounding the two protagonists, Mitchell and Sammi, and the development of their relationship was a bit too rushed, stereotypical, and too focused on sex to read as a balanced paranormal romance. It read more like a moderately well told M/M erotica romance.

That being said, all is not lost. There is potential here. Lorenz has a very nice ability to write characters you care about, and when they're not focused on the sexual aspects of the relationship, the surrounding story of a young kid who's really got the shaft in life (and not in the good way) and is in a dangerous and desperate situation isn't at all bad. It's maybe a little thinner in plot and depth than I would've liked but you do see a young man who struggles with self respect and an inner strength that starts to really flower after he finds his soul bonded love.

I liked Soul Bonds overall, and I really liked - and was most pleasantly surprised by - the very genuine relationship between Mitchell and his friend Brian. It's rare to find a M/M romance novel that introduces ancillary characters who seem genuinely a part of main characters lives and yet don't have sexual history together. I just think too many M/M romance or erotica novelists overlook the fact that gay men can have healthy non-sexual relationships with men. It's called friendship. M/F romance novelists understand that concept. I don't know why so many M/M romance novelists don't. It's wonderful for deepening and strengthening the story surrounding the protagonists.

Oops. Sorry. Stepping down off the soap box now, really.

Overall, a solid 3 Stars for Soul Bonds, and I'm looking forward to trying Lorenz's next in the series, Rush in the Dark.
